Newsletter 23: Suicide prevention in the NT funding available

The NT has the highest suicide rate in Australia. Want would you do if you had the $$ to make a difference in the NT lgbtqi community? The government is providing funding to individuals and communities to take action for suicide prevention.

Do you have an idea for a project, activity or action for suicide prevention that can:
– build inclusive communities and strengthen community resilience
– address stigma and discrimination
– raise awareness of effective suicide prevention practices.

The NT government has released grants (closes 2 Oct) for individuals and groups for suicide prevention.

Alice Springs: AIDS candle light memorial

Join NTAHC and communities all around the world as we come together to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.

We’ll light candles in solidarity with People Living with HIV, remember those we’ve lost and reflect on the progress made and challenges we still face in responding to HIV in our society.

NTAHC is holding two Candlelight Memorial events this year, in both Darwin and Alice Springs!

Join us in Alice Springs at Monte’s Lounge, Sunday 21 May, 5pm – 8pm
Refreshments will be provided along with live music by Ms Xavia! Candle making by donation.

All proceeds from these events will go towards providing care & support to people living with HIV in the NT.

Alice Springs Pride Carnivale: organising committee meeting

DO YOU WANT TO HELP WITH AUSTRALIA’S MOST REMOTE PRIDE FESTIVAL?

The Alice Springs Pride Carnivale Organising Committee are proud to announce they are now in their the fifth year. From humble beginnings on an unusually warm first day of winter in June 2013, people gathered from all parts of Australia in a little park by a dry riverbed in a small desert town, and Alice Springs Pride Carnivale was born. Those events were a family-friendly fair day, film festival & 18+ party and was organised in very little time with very little money but with amazing sponsorship from CAAMA Radio & Productions. Five years later, Pride Carnivale has expanded into a three day festival also comprising a launch, art exhibition and workshops & forums with increased attendance numbers and performers.

All Alice Springs Pride Carnivale events are run solely by volunteers and the Organising Committee is now looking for more members. Would YOU like to help with planning?! There are heaps of ways:

PROMOTION & PUBLICITY – organising media releases, newspaper articles & radio ads, making posts & monitoring social media, designing posters & other promotional material, hosting & monitoring the website
FINANCE/TREASURY – writing grants, balancing the budget, paying accounts & receiving income, liaising with the bookkeeper
FUNDRAISING – organising events & activities that FUNdraise and promote Pride Carnivale
PERFORMERS – liaising with & organising travel for people & groups who would like to do performances
SPONSORS – talking with individuals, businesses & associates about donating cash, goods and/or services
ADMIN – preparing agendas & minutes of organising committee meetings, updating & writing policies, monitoring emails, coordinating volunteers
REMOTE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT – talking with people out bush about Pride Carnivale and seeing how they can be involved
INDIVIDUAL EVENTS – helping out at the launch, art exhibition, workshops & forums, film festival, fair day and/or cabaret party

There will be subcommittees so you may only need to come to those meetings relevant to your subcommittee. The first Organising Committee meeting for 2017 will be held at 5:30 pm on Tuesday 28th February at Red Hot Arts Central Australia (opposite K-Mart). All welcome!

If anyone would like to know more, please message us on this page or email alicespringspridecarnivale @gmail.com

We look forward to making this, our fifth year, the most diverse, the most inclusive and the most fabulous Pride Carnivale yet!
